Floyd Mayweather Announces Next Fight, Tickets Initially Averaging Over $1,700 On Secondary Market

It won’t get the attention of a bout with Manny Pacquiao, but Floyd Mayweather has announced his next fight. Mayweather announced through social media on Tuesday that his 49th fight would take place on September 12, 2015 and encouraged fans to “book (their) hotel and flights now”. The fight is scheduled to be held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas against Andre Berto. Mayweather’s 49th fight — he currently has a record of 48-0 with 26 knockouts — would tie Rocky Marciano’s undefeated record of 49-0.

The chance to tie that record could be enough to keep ticket demand high for the fight, especially considering Mayweather has always been a significant draw for his fights in Vegas. While no information has been released concerning tickets being released, a few speculative tickets have hit the secondary market. The current average price for Floyd Mayweather vs Andre Berto tickets on TiqIQ is currently $1,719.09 with a get-in price of $372

At its current average, this fight would have the third most expensive secondary market Floyd Mayweather tickets since at least 2010, the year TiqIQ began keeping track of secondary market data. With limited tickets available for his fight against Manny Pacquiao, secondary market prices soared to a peak over $9,000 with the cheapest tickets listed at over $4,000. While those prices dropped closer to the fight, it was easily the most expensive boxing match since 2010. Mayweather’s second most expensive fight came back in September of 2013 against Canelo Alvarez. That fight could be a much better point of comparison, as it had an average price of $1,403.63 and a get-in price of $376.

Mayweather has stated he will retire after the fight next month, his last on a pay-per-view contract with Showtime, but many expect him to return for a 50th fight when Las Vegas opens the doors on its future multi-event arena. It will be interesting to see the demand of Mayweather’s upcoming fight after the in-ring performance against Pacquiao failed to meet expectations in May. Due to his history of domestic violence, vocal opponents to Mayweather could also get a louder platform with the fighter not involved in a matchup as highly profiled as the one against Pacquiao.

The September 12 card will also include a fight for the super-middleweight between champion Badou Jack and challenger George Graves. The WBO super-featherweight title will be on the line as well when champion Roman Martinez will face Orlando Salido in a rematch of a bout Martinez won by unanimous decision in April.
