'Far exceeded my expectations': Face transplant recipient hails staggering results of his procedure just EIGHT MONTHS after surgery and 10 years after he nearly blew his head off in failed suicide bid

A face transplant recipient in Rochester, Minnesota has hailed the staggering results of his surgery 10-years after a suicide bid (left, before his surgery in June, 2016). Andy Sandness, 31, from Wyoming, was first allowed to see his new face (right. pictured in January)) after three weeks of recovery at the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and his first response was to write down, 'far exceeded my expectations'.

His friend of a decade, Dr Samir Mardini, who led the surgical team, told him that 'You don't know how happy that makes us feel'. His new face once belonged to 21-year-old father-to-be, Calen Ross (inset), who shot himself before his wedding in June.

The operation took 56-hours in total and was the result of 10-years of procedures following his own failed attempt to kill himself before Christmas in 2006. He put the gun below his chin and blew half his face off, but instantly knew he had made a mistake, crying 'Please don't let me die' to the first responders who came for him. Now on the way to recovery, Sandness has said that he is pleased to be 'just another face in the crowd'.

science is amazing....
