'There were times when it seemed the Lord was sleeping': Pope Benedict explains decision to quit to tens of thousands pack into St Peter's Square for his final audience

Pope Benedict XVI was met by an adoring crowd and banners reading 'Thank you!' as he drove through St Peter's Square on his way to give his final general audience. Tomorrow he will meet with cardinals for a final time, then fly by helicopter to the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo where his pontificate will end at precisely 8pm.
